Surface Design Class starts February 15 6-8:30 PM
Three Part Surface Design Series: Now 5 nights: February 15 – March 14 Wednesdays 6- 8:30
All sessions are 2 ½ hours for $40/session which includes materials.
$200 for the full 5 nights Class is full with 6 students.
This is a sampler class, you can be thinking about how to use the parts created in each session in a composition or let your hand and eye explore and keep the best as a sampler of techniques and surfaces to refer to as you compose your future pieces. Surface embellishment techniques are now covered in two nights to give you ample time to explore. You will have 9-12 embellished cloths at the end of night 3. If you want to take your created cloths to finished art piece stay for nights 4 & 5.
1st Layer: Color. Add color to the fabric base layer. We will be adding color to a white field. You will paint with gravity, wet paint, & a dry brush using acrylic and fabric paints. Fabrics are stretched cottons, organza, canvas. Paint will applied to wet fabrics by pour, brush and spray. There will some use of resists at this stage. The cloths you paint will become the layers you compose with in subsequent classes. This is a wet paint class, wear studio clothes! aprons available. Come prepared to play and discover what delights your eye. 1st night Wed. February 15 6-8:30 pm
2nd Layer: Textures. We will use the cloths created in class one and layer on color and texture using stencils, rubbing, mono printing & paint into paint techniques. We will use fabric paints, acrylic paints, oil sticks, and some acrylic inks. We will both put texture under the fabric to achieve illusion of texture on the surface and add shapes and textures onto the surface. You will learn to look for textures & keep a collection. We will also touch on the texture effects of wet to dry methods and deconstructing fabric. There will a bit of home work between classes. This part of the class is now two nights so you can more fully explore. Wed. February 22 & 29 6-8:30pm You will start to see the possibilities of using the layers you have been creating to make a finished art piece.
3rd Layers:Compositions. Bring your layers back and we will embellish them! We add it up and glue it down with sticks and stones, papers, beads, broom straw, wires and threads,. Layers are the joy of mixed media. Using translucent fabrics, sew-able papers & unraveled edges it’s time to arrange and rearrange the layered possibilities. This is the place to look for the unexpected combinations that work while layering the surfaces you have created. We will use hot irons for bonding layers, hot glue, & wet glues, 2 sewing machines are available as well as needles and threads. Weds. March 7 & 14 6-8:30pm
Weds evenings 6-8:30 In February 15, 22, 29th & if you wish continue to finished pieces March 7 &14 You can choose to mat & frame a finished piece for additional fee.
